This weekend saw NLSK compete at the International Shobu-Ippon Open 2007 at Guildford Surrey. With 1,059 competitors taking part from 30 different Associations it was going to be a long day. It was a fine display from the 7member squad who made the effort to train and compete, of which 4 had never taken part in a competition before.
First to win a medal was Jane De Bono in the Ladies Novice Kata category, who took silver, losing by only 0.3. This was followed by 10 year old Ellen Welsh who has never competed before. Ellen was taking part in the Girls Novice under 5ft Kumite category. Ellen won her 3 fights to get to the final, narrowly losing 2-1, to take silver. The final event of the evening was the 5 man Association Kumite Team Event. Our team consisted of John Gilliland’s Gakushuin Karate International and NLSK, the team fought bravely to get through to the final, but lost the final to ASK. It was the second time that the team has lost the final, of which Clive Hughes won silver for his efforts in the team. The rest of the NLSK squad were Christine Mc Neill, Jack Welsh, Taylon Celit and grandad of two Peter Katsis. |
